Brian Simonet took this photo at the National cemetery in the Vicksburg
battle field park. G. W. Kearney was a member of Co. I , 9th MN regiment,
enlisting in 1862. He was captured at
the battle of Brice's Crossroads in June 1864, and was a POW for 10 months
before being released by the confederates in spring of 1865. He died April
19th, 1865 at McPherson's Hospital in Vicksburg of what was described as
typhoid pneumonia, he was only 21 years old. I'm sure his health had been
seriously compromised while a POW. He may have been at the infamous Andersonville
POW camp in Georgia but I haven't been able to confirm that even though "returned
prisoner from Andersonville " is written on his muster papers. I haven't been able
to find his name on the Andersonville web site. The grave to the left of George's
is of a soldier named Gillespi from TN, which is interesting because that was the
maiden name of his younger brother Andrew's first wife, strange coincidence.
